The Building Construction Technology Program is an open-entry, open-exit program that is designed to train you to use various types of skills to build, inspect, or repair structures in both residential or commercial applications. You will also learn to use tools, read blueprints, and inspect work. This is a hands-on program with the annual construction of a full-size, three bedroom home as a major learning experience. You will not only learn the “how” but also know the “why” from the experienced faculty.

This is a full-time day program; however, there are numerous woodworking/project courses in the Building Construction department taught in the evenings. Please refer to the latest schedule of course offerings for dates, days and times.

Program Objectives

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety hazards involved with the building construction industry.
  • Possess knowledge to perform tasks of entry level building construction employment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of personal and work characteristics that contribute to an effective job performance.
  • Use effective communication skills appropriate to the building construction industry.
  • Apply building theory to the construction of single and multiple family dwellings.
  • Use mathematical data and reasoning skills appropriate to the construction field.
  • Possess a basic understanding of the Uniform Building Code and have the ability to use code resources.

Graduates may expect to find entry level employment as Bricklayers and Stonemasons, Concrete Finishers, Construction and Well drillers, Construction Helpers, Construction Workers, Drywall Installers, Fence Builders, Floor and Carpet Installers, General Maintenance and Repair Workers, Gaziers, Insulation Workers, Managers of Workers and Helpers, Painters, Plasterers, Roofers, Structural Metal Workers, Tapers, Tile Setters, Wallpaper Hangers, Adult and Vocational Education Instructors, Boilermakers, Carpenters, Construction and Building Inspectors, Construction Managers, Cost Estimators, Floor Sanders and Finishers, Hazardous Material Workers, Highway Maintenance Workers, Millwrights, Operating Engineers and Construction Equipment Operators, or Roustabouts. Self-employment/business ownership is also a possibility.

Recommended Electives

Electives in HVAC, Business, Welding, Electrical Technology, Drafting, and Computers would be beneficial to the students.

BLDC 1005 Safety is a prerequisite for all Building Construction classes, except night classes.
