McCook Community College

 

Coach Jon Olsen is entering his third season as head baseball coach at McCook Community College.  Olsen enters his ninth year over all as a junior college head coach, Olsen was the first head coach in MCC history in 2002 then had a five year stint at Independence Community College in Independence KS before returning in the summer of 2007 to take over the Indian program again.

Coach Olsen, a McCook native graduated from McCook Senior high school in 1995, following graduation he played baseball his freshman year at Dodge City Community College, and his sophomore year at Colby Community College both in KS.  After graduating with his A.A. from Colby Olsen transferred to Wheaton College in Wheaton IL, where he completed his baseball eligibility and graduated in the fall of 1999 with a B.S. in Kinesiology.  Olsen stayed on in the spring of 2000 as an assistant coach at Wheaton, then in 2000-2001 Coach Olsen went back to Colby and spent one year as an assistant there.   Olsen also spent six seasons as the head coach in the McCook American Legion Baseball program in the summers from 1997 to 2002.  Olsen  completed his Masters degree in Health PE and Recreation from Emporia State University.

Coach Olsen was hired in the spring of 2001 to start the baseball program at McCook Community College.   After one season as the Indians head coach, Olsen was hired to take over the head coaching position at Independence Community College in Independence KS.  At Independence Olsen built the Pirates into a program that consistently competed for a top spot in the highly competitive Jayhawk East.  In his first season as Pirates head coach Olsen lead the Pirates to their first winning season in school history and was named the 2003 Jayhawk East coach of the year.   Only one of his teams at ICC had a losing conference record during his tenure at ICC.   Olsen also led ICC to the region VI tournament for the first time in school history.   In his five years at Independence Olsen recruited and coached 18 all conference players, four all region players, a Jayhawk East player of the year, and the first All American in school history.  Numerous players went on to play at all levels of collegiate baseball including 12 players to Division I schools, and 27 players to Division II schools.  Olsen’s final two recruiting classes in Kansas produced three Major League Baseball draft picks, in 2007 Josh Beal was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, in 2008 Jon Nagel to the Chicago Cubs, and in 2009 Justin Beal went to the Philadelphia Phillies. 

In July of 2007 Coach Olsen happily accepted the head coaching position at McCook Community College.  Olsen is excited for his third year at MCC, after seeing improvement in the win column in conference between year one and year two the Indians continue to strive to rise to the top of Region IX baseball.   Olsen also is a full time Health and PE instructor at MCC.

 

Phil Macke

Assistant Men's Baseball Coach

Coach Phil Macke enters his first year as an assistant coach at McCook Community College.  Macke a southwest Nebraska native graduated from Cambridge High School in Cambridge NE in 2003.  After graduation Macke attended McCook Community College and played baseball at MCC his freshman year.  Following his freshman year Macke transferred to Peru State College in Peru NE.  Macke completed his baseball eligibility at Peru playing three seasons for the Bobcats.   While at Peru Macke succeeded on the field as well as in the classroom, he was named a MCAC Scholar Athlete 2 years, as well as a MCAC Scholar Athlete of the year, and Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.  Macke graduated from Peru with a Bachelors of Science in Physical Education (K-12) in 2008.

 

Coach Macke started his coaching career in the summer of 2006 when he started coaching the senior legion team in Cambridge NE, Macke again coached the seniors in 2007, then took over in McCook as the senior legion head coach in 2008.  In 2008 Macke was selected to coach the league all-star game.  Macke begins his first year as a collegiate coach, and his first year with coach Olsen.  Macke will work with the pitchers this season as well as being a strong addition in recruiting.
